“ET phone home. ET phone home…” A meek little boy finds a stranded alien and offers help and shelter. He has to find the courage to defy the authorities to help the alien return to its home planet, and in the course of helping ET he finds love and purpose in his life.
This classic is the benchmark against which all other Spielberg films have been measured – and often found wanting! The world is a strange and sometimes threatening place to a child, and it is this experience that Spielberg has returned to time and time again, providing a heart-warming and redemptive experience at the end of the challenges of growing up. Recent War Horse sees the ‘part’ of ET taken by a horse (or 10), but essentially the theme is the same. And although he has explored this theme in a number of different films, no where is it more magical than in ET the Extraterrestrial. Well worth another look, particularly on the big screen.
