It’s award season again – rejoice! All those stored-up goodies are being brought out for your delectation. We’ll bring you the best of the Oscar (and BAFTA!) contenders; and then we’ll also bring you the ones that should’ve made the short lists.
Michael Fassbender in priapic good form in Shame, divided the Lexi team down the middle; see it and decide for yourselves. The Descendants, with G Clooney, got a resounding “yes!” from us all – the scion of a wealthy Hawaiian family begins to reassess when an accident leaves his wife unconscious. Intelligent, affecting, great script, some definite Oscar nods; those who like The Kids are All Right will love this. And everyone else as well! Roman Polanski may provoke outrage for his actions in a Californian hot tub all those years ago, but his film-of-the-play, Carnage, is outrageous good fun, with a cast including Jodie Foster, John C Reilly and Kate Winslett. (What Oscar season would be complete without a new offering from Winslett? Clockwork, and all that!) And just in case you haven’t seen enough of Michael Fassbender, his portrayal of Carl Jung in A Dangerous Practice sees him tussling with Freud (a nice turn from Viggo Mortenson) over medical ethics when treating sexual maladjustment. (There seems to be a theme here!) And for those of you who hanker after some good old-fashioned charm, wit and great invention, we will be bringing you The Artist - promise.
All this and more: low cal Valentine’s Day treats; another chance to flex film muscle in our February Film Quiz; and delightful half-term diversions for the young ‘uns. Keep watching…
